Adoption Part 1 – GOD CHOSE US!
When people find out that we are adopting children from Ethiopia many questions and assumptions immediately come to peoples’ minds. We have heard comments/questions like:
- Now that you have started the process, you will get pregnant (not me, but Jess).
- Did you find out that you cannot have kids of your own? (This question is never verbalized in this way, but some form of this question often comes up)
- You are such good people, I can’t imagine doing what you are doing.
- How can you afford this?
And here is the thing…We have been adopted by a Heavenly Father who has given us everything. He gave us life, He created all that we see, and then He gave us His Son so that we could spend eternity with Him. And He tells us in His Word that we are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. Read these words from Romans 8:15-17, “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.”
The answer to those previous questions begin to seem insignificant in light of the fact that we have been adopted by the GOD of the universe! The real question is how can we see children all over the world who do not have a mom or a dad and leave them in that situation. We are supposed to be the body of Christ! We are supposed to be GOD’s instrument in this world to accomplish His will, and He made it clear that adopting children who are hopeless and helpless otherwise is part of His will. Why are we adopting? Because we have been adopted in the most loving and selfless way the world has ever known or seen, and we want to follow the example of our Father by taking care of the children He loves.
Anyone who is reading this, if you have any questions about adoption or any interest in it, please feel free to ask. We do not have all of the answers, we are still in the process ourselves, but we do know it is something that GOD loves and something that He has already done for us.
I will tell you the answers to the previous questions in an upcoming post, I just want us to realize that adoption is the heart of GOD, and I am so thankful for that because without it, I would be without hope and without GOD in this world.
